Chris Charabaruk Online: Perhaps it's time to abandon Twitter

  • MarinaMartin · 8 months ago
Last year I tried (hard) to show people Identi.ca -- with the idea that microblogs are quickly becoming the new email, and having all your email on AOL and only being able to message other people on AOL clearly didn't last for long. We need an open standard that lets users on multiple microblogging services talk to one another.

There is the OpenMicroBlogging specification. The trick is getting all the microblogging services to use it.
  • Ken Sheppardson · 8 months ago
The first step in that process is building a concensus that OMB is the right approach. I'm not sure I believe that's been accomplished yet.
  • Chris Charabaruk · 8 months ago
Well, even if another open standard for microblogging was created, the same would apply to it. The trick really is to get the services to accept and use an open standard for microblogging, in whatever form it takes. It's just easier to do that with OMB since it already exists.

Didn't last summer's flings with identi.ca and plurk all but prove the majority of twitter users will never be pulled away from the service no matter how bad it gets? I think those of us who hate twitter are speaking to a wall anymore

I don't hate Twitter, I just can't see it getting over its problems. So I'm moving on. I'm suggesting that others should do the same, but you're right, there are a lot of Twitter die-hards who will absolutely refuse to switch to something newer and better, something that's learned from the mistakes of the past and gained from them.

Whether others change services or not is up to them. I'm simply suggesting that they might find something better out there if they make the switch.

The statement "We all know Twitter has jumped the shark" is silly. You can't possibly know that we all know this. As soon as I read that I knew you were full of it. Besides, I completely disagree, so right there, you're wrong :)
  • Chris Charabaruk · 8 months ago
"We all know" is an expression. Like "turning a phrase". Besides, a simple Google search turns up several other articles from more reputable sources than I stating that Twitter has, indeed, jumped the shark.

While Twitter does have it's problems if you take a gander at co-founder Biz Stone's interview at the Colbert show he specifically talks about the companies future and how it is trying to create the perfect platform before starting to monetize Twitter. So they are working on a perfectly robust system before opening the commercial gates.

I do agree that their feedback system sucks and needs to be addressed, but I am sure they are aware of it and working on it.

You can check the interview @ http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report...

As I mentioned on FriendFeed, it's not each issue individually (and there's more than the one I did in detail here), but a perfect storm of issues affecting Twitter which is leaving users feeling alienated and pissed off with the service.

There are technical issues besides the rate limitations and fail whale. There are the scammers, the stalkers and the celebs. There's the poor customer relations. The Canadian (and international) SMS issues. Each individually isn't too bad a problem. But putting them all together and you have a huge mess bigger than the sum of all those little messes.

And really, I've had enough of it. And I'm neither the first nor the last to feel this way. I'm just the most vocal about it at the moment. (And even that's transitory; someone else will likely publish their own screed about Twitter's problems sooner or later.)

I actually prefer facebook because I have found it more personal than Twitter. I am not getting twitter and how quick it moves.....once you add your message and link at least another 10 people also add there link and message...so how can you reach everyone if your message has already gone?

If people posted to Facebook as often as they did to Twitter, you'd have the same issue there, or worse. Look at the speed with which posts on the FriendFeed public beta move. The thing is, both FriendFeed and Facebook make it relatively easy to group and filter content, right on site. You can do similar grouping and filtering with Twitter, but only so long as you use third party programs like TweetDeck or Seesmic Desktop.

There's another reason why it's time to move on from Twitter. The lack of control over incoming content, at least with the base service itself.

Even if it's not time "abandon" Twitter, people need to at least TRY these other services.

Get a different point of view, have a freaking opinion about where things are going! Anything! Just don't be so passive and permissive with Twitter, sticking with them no matter what.
